What Makes A Character

Book examining the visual commonalities of a character

For this book, I wanted to examine the elements that comprise a character. I illustrated the same characters/figures depicted by different artists to see where forms, objects, and subjects overlap to create a recognizable icon. I chose Venus, Bacchus, and Judith and Holofernes to show similarities between artists' interpretations of these figures. These artists include Menophantus, Botticelli, Cleomenes, Giambologna, Michelangelo, Sansovino, Donatello, Allori, and Gentileschi. I printed these illustrations on vellum so that the forms of these sculptures and paintings could be directly compared and created patterns in which they intertwine with each other.
