A conversation between Eva Hesse and Sol Lewitt

I chose two texts to put into this book; the first is the diary of artist Eva Hesse and the second is a letter to Hesse from Sol Lewitt. Eva was going through a period of self doubt and was struggling with her work and mental health, so she wrote a letter to her friend, Sol, expressing her insecurities as an artist. He wrote a compelling letter back to her urging her to push through her issues and keep creating. Putting these texts alongside each other, I had to use scale, typeface, and weight to create hierarchy and differentiate the two voices. I featured some of Hesse's artworks to show how she was able to find creativity despite her challenges.
I started my process by gathering visual research and found that minimalistic, monochromatic themes fit with the artistic style of Eva Hesse. I conducted type studies to see what combinations of typefaces and sizes for Eva's and Sol's texts would be complementary and clearly signify which voice they were in. I did color studies as well, and took most of my color palette from the neutral, earthy tones that appear in Eva's work, which often features fibers, plaster, etc. I continued to play around with the layout of the book, and decided that the book should start with the diary entry in which Eva included her letter to Sol. I made a mini book attached on the first page in order to share her earlier diary entries which show her state of mind, without complicating the timeline established in the book. I wanted to include other interactive aspects like fold-out flaps and velum inserts to create an engaging book that would keep the viewer interested. Lastly, I added handwritten elements to communicate the personal nature of the entries and letters.
