A book about how war changes a home

I created this do-si-do book to pair two texts relating to how war changes one's home. The first text, The Excursion of the Dead Girls by Anna Seghers, is an autobiographical novella in which Seghers describes the experience of revisiting memories of her past in Germany before she had to flee due to World War II. The second text is from an episode of the podcast This American Life called Home Test in which Valerie Kipnis tells the story of a boy and his family as they choose to return to Mariupol, Ukraine after it is occupied by Russia. I chose to pair these texts because despite them taking place nearly a century apart, they both communicate a desire to find one's way home after the destruction of war and how war can transform what home looks like.
The book is formated as a do-si-do so that the two texts are read independently but meet in the middle. To differentiate the two, I experimented with typeface, columns/grid, image treatment, marginalia, and paper color. Through the image treatment, I tried to communicate a sense of loss of memory, fragmentation, and destruction to evoke the painful process of losing one's home physically and emotionally due to conflict.
